About Us

1940 - Bishop Daniel Desmond, D.D., buys land on what was called "Race Track Addition" to build St. Rita Church.

1941 - In July, Rev. Hermel Dube becomes the first pastor of St. Rita Parish - consisting of approximately 60 families; with a total of 375 parishioners.

1948 - St. Rita School opens in August.

1994 - Fire destroys the church, located on 214 North 17th Street.

1995 - Bishop Sam Jacobs announces that the church will be rebuilt at 4401 Bayou Rapides Road. The Diocese donates 6.6 acres located behind the diocesan offices. On December 3, ground is broken by Bishop Jacobs and parishioners beginning construction of the new church.

1996 - The first Mass is celebrated at the new location on September 21.

2001 - In August, St. Rita School moves to England Airpark (2386 Vandenburg Drive).

2002 - In January, the parish opens a Child Development Center, located at England Airpark (1005 Seip Drive).

2003 - After 7 years, the mortgage to the new church building is paid in full in October.
